What is Airbnb?

Airbnb is an online booking platform for people to find or host unique accommodations all over the world.  Instead of the normal, kinda lame hotel bookings, you have the options to sleep in castles, lofts, caves, and more incredible stays worldwide for sometimes a fraction of what a hotel costs. It’s a great way to save money, splurge money, and have a jaw-dropping place to sleep for the night. If you look at the photos above, these are just a sneak peek of the gems there are to find on this website.

  • Is Airbnb affordable?

Whether your budget is $10/night or $300/night, Airbnb has something for everyone. I love this because no matter your budget or preferred accommodation, you’re going to find an affordable, unique place to stay during your trip that will add that extra wow factor to your trip.

  • What types of listings are on Airbnb?

Airbnb has everything from villas, houses, apartments, guesthouses, bungalows, lofts, cabins, campgrounds, and everything in between. If you can name it, they have it.

How Does The First Time Booking Coupon Work?

Airbnb has a first time booking discount for those of you who are new to Airbnb and want an awesome discount for your first booking. If you already have an account with Airbnb, sadly this won’t work for you, but you can always make a new account if you want and beat the system. The code applies automatically, so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of a code or anything. The discount price changes every so often, but right now it’s good for $40 off your first stay! Enjoy!

Create your new account with Airbnb using this link, and you’ll receive $40 off your first trip!

Using this link, you’ll receive $40 off your first trip of $75 or more and I will receive $20 off my stay for recommending you! Then, after you get back from your awesome trip, you can share your own link and when your friends and family sign up, and then you’ll get the $20 when they complete their first trip. It’s a never-ending cycle of free money and it’s an awesome way to put money back into local life!

How to Find the Right Airbnb for You

Search Homes

Click the search bar at the top and enter the city that you will be staying in. Generally, it will auto-populate underneath and you’ll be able to select your location. After that, select the “homes” option to make sure you’re not mixing a search of experiences and homes. Most if not all major cities have tons of places to choose from, but if you’re going somewhere more remote, click the “show map” option under your navigation tabs and you’ll be able to zoom in on the map and search the specific location. I like to use the map feature anyway because it gives me a good idea of where I’ll be in comparison to activities, etc.. I am going to use Texas as my example because I’ve been interested in staying in a done-up airstream in the desert to chill and stargaze!

Add Guests and Dates

I went ahead and added two guests to my search (even though I generally travel solo). What I like about this site is that when you put in your dates and click “apply”, if homes are selling fast and there are few homes left, it will notify you and tell you to book soon. I always try to book in advance. That doesn’t always happen, but if you find a treasure, you’ll want to book as soon as you can. This year I had booked a last-minute trip to the Philippines and almost didn’t have a place to stay on one of the islands (yikes), so always look before you buy flights and things to make sure you’ll be getting a place you enjoy.

Set Your Price

This is where your personal budget comes in. You can set your per night stay cost low or high depending on what you are willing to spend. Personally, I have never spent more than $50/night on a place to stay because I have always found beautiful places to stay within that price range. However, keep in mind your location and what normal prices are for those areas. Since I am staying in the states I know that I can’t expect to get dirt cheap accommodation, and that’s okay.  I am going to set mine at $200/night so that I can compare different locations and the quality of the living space. Plus, sometimes you find the perfect place that’s a little out of your price range, and you just have to splurge because it’s THAT perfect.

Fill Out Your “Home Type” and “More Filters” Tabs

These tabs are going to help narrow your search to find your preferred home. You only need to choose the “Trip Type” tab if you need to select it for work purposes, and as for “Instant Book” these home will come up in your search anyway. For my search, I selected “Wifi” and “Camper/RV” under the “Unique Homes” tab in “More Filters”. I am a pretty simple gal. After you’re done filling these out, click on “Show (#) Homes” in the bottom right-hand corner, and in doing this, it will update your search even further.

Browse Homes and Read Reviews

When browsing, you want to find high-quality photos of the property and make sure you read through their reviews: good and bad. I ended up doing a smaller search near Big Bend National Park and that helped me narrow down my search, and help me kill two birds with one stone since I am dying to go camping and see Big Bend. If you’re finding that a specific search isn’t working for you, you can always change what you’ve set in your tabs for different searches. I selected the ones I found to be the most appealing in terms of photos and I ended up with all types of prices, which is great to have an example.

Save Your Homes To Your Wishlist

Once you find homes that you want to keep on your radar, you’ll want to save them to your wish list. To get here, look under your navigation tabs, where the “show map” option once was, and select the “save” button. You also have to option to share this via Facebook, Twitter, Email, Messenger, Email, or by copying the link.

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 8.12.32 PM

Once you click the save button, you’re going to see a little pop-up screen with options to save it to one of your current lists or create a new one. I went ahead and created a ‘Texas Airstreams’ list because it obviously doesn’t belong in any of the other places.

Now to go back and compare all of these, find the “saved” tab at the top of the page and click on the list you made with all of the properties. Here you’re able to compare locations of all the places you saved, and they’re easily accessible for you get to, and you can share the list with the other people or person that you’re staying with.

With each space you saved, you’re going to want to go through each one and look through all the photos (by clicking on the main photo on the guesthouse page) and read through their pet, smoking, cancellation, and other policies that will be important for your stay. It’s important to read through all the booking details because each host sets its own. For example, the space I chose above has these policies:

Guest Access | There is no shared space with the Airstream. Guests have extreme privacy with their own driveway and parking area. Guests have full use of the entire property.
Cancellations | Moderate – Free cancellation for 48 hours. After that, cancel up to 5 days before check-in and get a full refund, minus the service fee.
House Rules | No smoking, no pets, no parties or events, check-in after 3 pm, check out by 11 am, self-check-in with a lockbox.

Booking Your Stay

You will find the booking form after you select on your desired property and scroll down. On the right side, it’s going to have your travel dates, number of guests, and a price breakdown. Be mindful that some places do charge cleaning and service fees, which can add a lot more money to your stay, similar to this one that I have chosen below. Some hosts on Airbnb offer weekly and monthly stay discounts so if you stay for those periods of time, they’ll give you a certain percentage off your stay. This one is 15% weekly, but I have seen it be up to 30% off for a monthly stay. Either way, a discount is a discount in my eyes! If you accepted my $40 discount, it will apply during your booking process.

After you have looked over pricing and approved it, click “book” and it will take you through the rest of the booking process, you’ll punch in all your card details and voila, you’ve booked your first stay!

Sometimes you have to request to book a place, but if you don’t want to deal with that when you search just select the “instant book” option. Basically, that means they go on your profile to make sure you’re chill and then they’ll approve your offer.

Leaving Reviews and Receiving Reviews

Airbnb is all about ensuring that people have excellent stays with their hosts, so reviews are a big part of the site. Not only can you leave reviews of where you stayed, but you can also receive your own reviews! Here is one of the reviews I received earlier this year:

  • “It was our pleasure to host you 🙂 Thanks for the good memories and choosing our place. I recommended.”

It’s short and sweet, but it gives other hosts the green light that you’re safe and chill. On the other side, leaving reviews for places ensures that others are going to have a safe and enjoyable stay. For example, one of the reviews on the airstream I chose was this:

  • “Justin and Trevor are two of the kindest souls you’ll ever meet. Justin displays genuine care for his guests and is definitely committed to providing you with everything you need to have a wonderful experience. We could not have asked for a more perfect getaway and it was more than we ever imagined it to be.”

After your stay, I think it’s important to give your host feedback so that they know how they are doing, or what they could do to improve the experience for their next guest(s).
